Bessie

Bessie’s Story

Bessie / Female / Approx. 1 year old / 45 lbs / Mixed Breed / Good with Dogs / Not Tested with Kids / Not Tested with Cats / From Manitoba / Fostered in Toronto

Meet Bessie! Bessie is a sweetheart who is both curious and relaxed and is equal parts explorer and expert napper. Bessie survived a long, hard winter in Manitoba as a young mother to three pups and was luckily brought into care in time to save them all. Since then, this lovable pup has been enjoying the good life in her foster home and she’s ready to find her forever family!

Bessie is a connoisseur of all things cozy. She absolutely adores pets (the more, the merrier), going for leisurely strolls, and keeping an eye on the neighborhood squirrels like they’re her own personal soap opera. When she’s not on squirrel watch, you can find her lounging in the yard, contemplating the mysteries of the universe (or maybe just dreaming of treats). Bessie also enjoys two to three leisurely walks a day, each lasting around 30 minutes, sprinkled with backyard breaks for some quality lounging. She’s still mastering the art of leash walking, so expect a little tugging here and there as she improves with her fosters’ help.

This delightful lady is a pro at seeking affection—she’ll sneak up beside you and nuzzle into your leg like a furry little shadow. Bessie thrives on companionship and will happily follow you around the house, making sure you’re never alone (who wouldn’t want a devoted sidekick?). At night, Bessie curls up on her own bed, but let’s be real—she’d much rather snuggle with you! If you’re looking for a medium-sized dog with the heart of a big dog, Bessie is ready to fill your home (and your heart) with love. Bessie is very treat motivated and is learning commands quickly and already knows sit and stay. Bessie is fully potty trained.

Bessie is friendly with everyone, including strangers, and has a particular fondness for men! While she hasn’t met any kids yet, her foster thinks she’d be fantastic with dog-savvy children. Bessie is adaptable and could thrive in various settings, but would love a house with a yard to lounge and patrol for squirrels. As long as she’s with her human (bonus points if you have a doggy sibling!), she’ll be content in any home. We recommend a cat-free home, as her squirrel obsession might lead to some unwanted "chase the fluff" adventures!

Bessie is currently working through a bit of separation anxiety and gets a little nervous when her humans leave. Her fosters are helping her work through it, and with a little patience, her future family can help her feel secure while she is alone. If you have room in your heart—and maybe on your bed—Bessie would love to be your new best friend!

Bessie will be spayed in the next couple of months. If she is adopted by then, the spay will be done at no cost to her adopter if done at our partner vet located in Mississauga.
